Romeo still had his rucksack, and as tattered as it was, it was the most important thing he had on him.
Damn this heat. The sun was starting to burn his bare torso, mostly his right shoulder. Not only was the heat irritating, but the dust sure got up his nose. Quite literally...
He dropped his bag down and lifted his battered bottle to his lips, taking a deep gulp of the luke-warm water within. Romeo longed to be back at the river where he'd found the bottle and gathered the water...he could almost feel the icy rapids washing over his burning flesh...almost....
If the entire situation didn't suck enough as it was, he found himself in one of the long gaps between the houses. No shade what so ever, just sun...and dust...
A car pulled up next to him kicking up dust and reflecting the heat.
"Need a ride kid? It's too hot ta' be walkin'!" An old voice called.
Romeo peered into the car, trying to make out a face in the shade.
"Yeah, just to a café or something..." The boy replied and pulled open the car's door, before sitting on one of the cool seats.
It felt as though the air con. had been on full blast for hours! Like a freezer, the icy air shot daggers at his roasting skin - he loved it. In fact, he let out a 'ahh!' of appriciation.
"S'hot, huh?" He said taking breaths of the cool air. The car began to gain some speed.
"Yeah. We don't normally get it this hot!..." A few seconds of silence ensued, "So...you're from outta town? Sounds like a...Boston accent?" The friendly man casually asked.
"Detroit actually..." Romeo didn't even know where Boston was. He couldn't remember.
"Heh, couldn't have been more wrong, huh?" The man added.
"Yeah." Romeo answered. What a rude answer! Being so closed to this man, he'd just saved minutes of unbearable heat!
The car finally stopped outside 'Bar'.
"There you go, pal. I'm Sheriff Dayes, by the way. If you're staying for a while, you'll probably see me around.." Nate commented, with an open smile.
"Thanks..." Romeo replied and stepped from the car, back into the dry heat. He watched how the black sudan drove away, kicking up dirt as it went.
